Foreign Exchange Hedging Products
Spot Contract
Spot contracts allow you to convert foreign currency at today's market foreign exchange rate. In most cases, final
settlement takes place two business days later. Spot contracts are useful when you must make a payment for products
or services in a foreign currency or when you wish to convert foreign currency receipts into US dollars (USD).
Forward Contract **
Forward foreign exchange contracts are used to protect your profit margin when receiving or making a foreign currency
payment at some point in the future, usually as a result of foreign sales or purchases. A forward contract that
"locks-in" the foreign exchange rate for a future date eliminates the uncertainty that fluctuations in the exchange
rate could have on your profits.
Foreign Exchange Swap**
Foreign exchange swaps are timing mechanisms used to hedge borrowings and investments. This device is a simultaneous
purchase and sale of the same amount of a given currency for two different dates. In essence, swapping is similar to
borrowing one currency and lending another for the same period.
